A Look Back at 2019 – Chairperson of AOSAP Education (Ortho)

I sincerely appreciate the former Chairperson of Education Committee, Satish Rudrappau and Manabu Ito, who had successfully accomplished their duties as follow:
AO Spine Asia pacific had a successful year of educational activities in 2019. Overall, 63 events involving, 612 faculties, 4690 participants were conducted at AOSAP region including training 61 faculty/chairpersons in the FEP & CEP programs represented from 12 countries of the regions. Highlight of last year program was the success of specimen courses. 10 cadaver specimen courses were held at whole AP region including 3 Regional Cadaver Courses. We also had a successful AOSAP organized symposium on Cervico-thoracic junction pathologies at GSC which was well-received by the participants.

I would like to extend the last year’s experiences to more interactive, collaborative and fruitful AOSAP education events. For this, we are planning a new format of Regional Cadaver Course and inter-country AO Spine event. We aim to develop a holistic and innovative education programs that fit for the future generation.

Looking forwards to 2020 and beyond
Chairperson of AOSAP Education (Neuro)

Education is one of the most important projects in AO Spine. Many countries involve in AO Spine Asia Pacific (AP). We are diverse in culture and language as well as medical levels, however, our goal is the same that our activities are for patient’s happiness. We try to bottom up our medical levels and also learn current knowledge. Hopefully, we will promote our new projects for education in AO Spine Asia Pacific (AP). Educational committee in AO Spine AP plan to have regional courses throughout the Asian countries. We also have CEP and FEP to develop new faculty members. Our education contents are getting much closer to your needs and interests in your daily practice

Faculty Development

Faculty development in the AO aims at fostering and supporting our faculty to provide the best possible teaching at our clinical courses. The objectives are to promote excellence in teaching, to facilitate surgeon learning and curriculum development. Strategies developed in the programs can positively impact on course design and more generally contribute to our mission to deliver high quality education.

How can faculty development benefit you?

Faculty development is the key to a successful teaching role for you as a surgeon, providing you with opportunities to strength non-surgical skills while advancing your career.

Both programs were designed to give tools and training to clinical experts to become better teachers and experts in education. They were equipped not only with theoretical understanding but also with the practical skills required to fit together the different elements that lead to an effective educational event.

Educator of the Year 2019

AO Spine Asia Pacific Educator of the Year distinguishes a highly respected member of the AO Spine Community in his/her region who has demonstrated sustained and significant contribution to educational excellence.

According to the scoring scheme for AO Spine Asia Pacific, the Nomination Committee of Educator of the Year (Manabu Ito, Dong-Kyu Chin, Yoshiharu Kawaguchi, Rupinder Pal Singh Chahal and Hisam Arifin) confirmed and approved the result.

Professor Tomoaki Toyone had been selected to be the AO Spine Asia Pacific Educator of the Year 2019. He had been AO Spine Asia Pacific member for 15 years. He has been involved as a faculty in many congress, courses and seminars in AO Spine Asia Pacific, Switzerland and Spain.

Apart from his International, regional and national teaching experience in AO Spine, he has been actively involved in AO Spine Japan and AOSAP regional board, being Community Development officer in 2006 – 2009 and Council chairperson in 2015 -2018 and Past Council Chairperson in 2019 – 2021 in AO Spine Japan council as well as Chairperson of Spine Centers and Fellowship Committee in Regional board in 2010-2013. His professional and interactive teaching style impressed many participants and faculties during the event and brought many new elements locally, regionally and internationally.

Please join us in congratulating Professor Tomoaki Toyone on his success!

It is a great pleasure and honor for me to be chosen as the Educator of the Year.
Recalling back my encounter with AO Spine, I had the chance to hear a lecture on spinal deformity from Professor John Webb in Tokyo in 1999. After this impressive lecture, I asked him a couple of questions. Professor Webb answered my questions courteously and asked me to visit Nottingham to attend a live surgery seminar. After the fantastic seminar in Nottingham, Professor Webb kindly asked me to take part in the AOSpine Davos Course as an instructor!
Since 2000, I have been a faculty member of AO Spine courses and seminars held in Japan and Asian countries such as China, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and India, and I was awarded the Young Faculty Award in 2006. I also served as the Japan council chairperson from 2015 to 2018.
AO Spine provides interactive education not only for participants but also for faculty members. We can always encounter brand-new techniques and philosophies through AO Spine. I cannot thank AO Spine enough!
